Why three-paycheck months happen

26 biweekly paychecks spread over 12 months means 24 months-worth of 'two checks' plus two extra. Any month that starts within the first two days of a pay cycle ends up containing three Fridays that are paydays. On a weekly schedule the same thing happens four times a year with five-paycheck months.

How people use the extra check

Most monthly bills (rent, mortgage, car payment, subscriptions) are budgeted against two paychecks, so the third check in those months is not already spoken for. Common uses: an extra mortgage or loan principal payment, topping up an emergency fund, a Roth IRA contribution, or paying annual bills (insurance, property tax) that otherwise land all at once. Payroll admins should note that benefit deductions set up per-paycheck will also be taken 27 times in a 27-period year unless the system skips the extra period.
